Getting Around

Mauritius can be a tricky place and true to all islands, traffic is often a problem when getting from one place to another. You might have heard that getting to anywhere takes an hour or more by car, and that there are large ditches on the side of most roads, not to mention a few stray dogs here and there. Not to worry however, Mauritius is still a fun and interesting place to drive in - and if you like driving, it will definitely be a subject of conversation back home.

Taxis

Taxis are a great way to get around if you're not into dodging busses. You'll find a taxi outside most hotels and in tourist places. In fact there is an oversupply of taxi's in Mauritius. Some taxi's might try to get you to pay an unreasonably high fare, others may take you to so called factory shops to collect their commission, but generally, you can trust your taxi to take care of you and show you Mauritius from his angle. General taxi fares will range from Rs 500 for a short trip to Rs 1500 for an airport transfer. A full day touring should not cost over Rs 2500 per vehicle. Taxis will always have white number plates.

Car Hire

The best way to be independent in Mauritius is by renting a car and GPS. Various makes and models are available for rent which require a credit card and drivers license. You might want a basic runaround, a convertible or a seven seater for the whole family. Prices range up from Rs 1600 per day for basic models and will vary depending on the number of rental days, generally the longer the cheaper. Make sure to rent your car through a reputable agency. Its often worth paying that little extra for good vehicles and service. Make sure your car has yellow plates.

Scooters

Scooters can be found at most coastal villages but especially in Grand Bay and Flic en Flacq. Call Mr Concierge to book your scooter and make sure to properly check that its in perfect working order before driving away. Scooter rental costs between Rs 600 and 700 per day.
